I woke up in the middle of the night with my feet as cold as ice and my cheeks wet with tears. In adulthood, even as we had gone our own ways, Ellen and I had always known the other was there for her. That's what it's like to grow up like sisters.
But it would be no more.
Tears rolling down my cheeks, I grabbed doggie's water bowl from under the bed and hurried to the bathroom, filled it with hot water, then sat down on the closed toilet and unfroze my toes again and again.
My feet warmed, but my tears were still flowing.
I want my Ellen back.
